Who Am I?
I was first introduced to the Akita
breed in late 1968 and adopted my first Akita dog in
January 1969. At that time, the Akita was still being
shown in the Miscellaneous Class at AKC-sanctioned shows.
I lived without a dog (of any kind) throughout most
of the '80s and '90s, but eventually adopted my 4th
(and current) Akita, Benny, in 1997. Since then, I have
rekindled my interest in this marvelous breed of dog,
particularly Akita pedigrees, history, and health issues.

My History as ACA Akita Registrar
My "claim to fame" (assuming
I have one) involves the Akita breed of dog. The American
Kennel Club (AKC) recognized the Akita breed and
admitted it to registration in the American Kennel
Club Stud Book in October 1972, and to regular show
classification in the Working Group at AKC shows beginning
April 4, 1973.
Prior to that and beginning in December
1971, I served the Akita
Club of America, Inc. (ACA) as Akita Registrar.
During the AKC's Akita Foundation Stock Registration
period, which ended February 28, 1974, I processed applications
from Akita owners to effect the transfer of their dogs'
registration from ACA to AKC–all while continuing to
register additional American-born Akitas and Japanese
imports.
Among other things, during that time
I learned to recognize Japanese characters and transliterate
pedigrees from the Japanese. (As I've never made a formal
study of Japanese, I certainly had help doing that!)
Since then, AKC has been the sole registering body for
Akitas in this country.
After the close of foundation stock
registration, I researched, compiled, and prepared for
publication a volume containing all the relevant pedigree
data pertinent to AKC Foundation Stock Akitas. This
volume, entitled The
Akita Club of America, Inc. Akita Stud Book Register,
was first copyrighted and published in 1976. Then, in
honor of the 25-year anniversary of the AKC's recognition
of the Akita Breed, I reprinted this volume in 1998.
