What You'll Find Here

This site is a work-in-progress with new pages, new information being added periodically. Currently, I offer my ACA Akita Stud Book Register for sale and present photos of my Akitas, information about a fascinating book written by Nicholas C. Rhoden, and an interview in which I discuss the historical details re AKC Akita Foundation Stock Registration.

I've just created an Akita cartoon page, which will expand over time. Check the 'What's New' page periodically for new and future additions.

You can navigate through my site by clicking the links below, by clicking the labeled buttons at the top left of each page, or by clicking the hyperlinks at the bottom of all the other pages. Here's what you'll find:

Banner Text Stud Book Info—Information describing the ACA Akita Stud Book Register which I prepared in 1976 (under contract with the Akita Club of America [ACA]) and republished in 1998.

Banner Text Place Order—Information on ordering the ACA Akita Stud Book Register, either by eCheck/CreditCard or PersonalCheck/MoneyOrder. Now offered at a new low price!

Banner Text Pawprints in Japan: Dogs in Myth and History—Information describing this fascinating book by Nicholas C. Rhoden and how to order it. All proceeds will go to the American Kennel Club (AKC) Canine Health Foundation to fund medical research to benefit the Akita and other breeds.  new17.gif

To view a large collection of photos (16 sets, 10 photos/set) re this antarctic expedition and the Karafuto dog participants, go to the web site created by Dr. Toru Kikuchi, a geologist who managed the expedition's dogsled team. The language of the text is Japanese, but that of the photos is universal.

Banner Text Interview—J. Creason's interview of me, an interview which appeared in the Winter 2000 issue of Akita Dog, the quarterly publication of the Akita Club of America (ACA). Use the "Back" and "Next" arrows at the top and bottom of each page to advance through the interview.

Banner Text My Fur-Faces—A photo gallery of my family of Akitas and cats, past and present. Use the "Back" and "Next" arrows at the top and bottom of each page to advance through the gallery.

Banner Text Akita Cartoons—A gallery of fabulous cartoons created in the early 1970s by artist Hubert Coutu. Most of these were published in the ACA Newsletter.  new17.gif

Banner Text Liz Articles—Reprints of articles written and published by the late Liz Harrell, one of the most knowledgeable and highly regarded Akita breeders.  undercon.gif

Who Am I?

I was first introduced to the Akita breed in late 1968 and adopted my first Akita dog in January 1969. At that time, the Akita was still being shown in the Miscellaneous Class at AKC-sanctioned shows. I lived without a dog (of any kind) throughout most of the '80s and '90s, but eventually adopted my 4th (and current) Akita, Benny, in 1997. Since then, I have rekindled my interest in this marvelous breed of dog, particularly Akita pedigrees, history, and health issues. You can find more biographical details at Kay S Greisen - Bio.

My History as ACA Akita Registrar

My "claim to fame" (assuming I have one) involves the Akita breed of dog. The American Kennel Club (AKC) recognized the Akita breed and admitted it to registration in the American Kennel Club Stud Book in October 1972, and to regular show classification in the Working Group at AKC shows beginning April 4, 1973.

Prior to that and beginning in December 1971, I served the Akita Club of America, Inc. (ACA) as Akita Registrar. During the AKC's Akita Foundation Stock Registration period, which ended February 28, 1974, I processed applications from Akita owners to effect the transfer of their dogs' registration from ACA to AKC–all while continuing to register additional American-born Akitas and Japanese imports.

Among other things, during that time I learned to recognize Japanese characters and transliterate pedigrees from the Japanese. (As I've never made a formal study of Japanese, I certainly had help doing that!) Since then, AKC has been the sole registering body for Akitas in this country.

After the close of foundation stock registration, I researched, compiled, and prepared for publication a volume containing all the relevant pedigree data pertinent to AKC Foundation Stock Akitas. This volume, entitled The Akita Club of America, Inc. Akita Stud Book Register, was first copyrighted and published in 1976. Then, in honor of the 25-year anniversary of the AKC's recognition of the Akita Breed, I reprinted this volume in 1998.
