What is AKC Foundation Stock?

Early in 1973, the American Kennel Club (AKC) recognized the Akita and allowed it to compete in regular conformation classes. Prior to AKC recognition, Akita registrations in the U.S. were processed and maintained by the Akita Club of America, Inc. (ACA), who registered Japanese imports and litters/individuals born in the U.S. since 1957.

During AKC's Akita Foundation-Stock Registration period (which ended February 28, 1974), Akita owners filed applications with the ACA Registry to transfer their dogs' registration to AKC. Since then, AKC has been the sole registering body for Akitas in the U.S. AKC Foundation Stock comprises all those imported and American-born Akitas registered in this manner with AKC.

To learn more about the early Akita registration process and Kay Greisen's involvement with it, read her interview that appeared in the Winter 2000 issue of Akita Dog, a quarterly publication of the Akita Club of America, Inc.

What about registration of Japanese imports?

When AKC closed Akita Foundation Stock Registration, it simultaneously closed AKC registration to additional Japanese imports. This import ruling was later reversed on April 13,1992.

How can I trace present-day Akitas back to AKC foundation stock?

Use the Stud Book Register in conjunction with the following references to generate a pedigree of any AKC-registered Akita sire/dam back to a 3-generation pedigree of each ancestral import:*

* This excludes imports registered since AKC reopened the Akita Stud Book to imports in 1992.

Banner Text  Akita Health Registry database, conceived and created by Rex Orrin (U.K.) and available to users free of charge. This site can only be accessed via Internet Explorer (not Netscape).

A hyperlinked five-generation pedigree can be created for any AKC-registered Akita that has sired or whelped an AKC-registered litter.

Pedigrees can also be created for many dogs located in numerous countries outside the U.S.

As of December 2002, over 61,000 individual Akitas have been listed in this database.

Single-month issues (effective January 2000) of the AKC Online Stud Book—prepared separately for each recognized breed—can be purchased through the 'Dog Reports' section of the AKC online store.

Hard-copy versions of the AKC Stud Book Register (published prior to January 2000) are available to researchers at The AKC Library in New York City, New York and at numerous libraries throughout the U.S.
