Liz Harrell's Written Works

Liz Harrell didn't receive any formal, higher education. But she was very curious and had a keen mind. She educated herself about the Akita breed, about breeding practices (especially as applied to Arabian horses), and about sound veterinary care. Not only did she educate herself, but she endeavored to educate those around her. She gave speeches and published many articles, some of which appear here (with permission of the copyright owner, the author). She spoke at local Akita club meetings and at Akita National Specialties. Her articles appeared in The Akita (her own Hoshi Hochi Publication), Akita World, The Akita Journal, and Northern Dog News.

My Stud-Book Dedication to Liz

I feel that I must dedicate the very existence of this book to Liz Harrell, a remarkable woman about whom many already know the following truths:

Banner Text  She has dedicated the past 40 years of her life to the welfare and betterment of the Akita Breed.

Banner Text  She was one of the original nine founding members of the Akita Club of America, Inc., parent breed club that spearheaded AKC-recognition of the Akita.

Banner Text  She was the original organizer of the ACA Registry and personally processed the 453 applications on which the Akita's entry into the AKC Miscellaneous class was based.

Banner Text  She has published monthly newsletters (both for the ACA and on her own) and has for many years been committed to educating others about Akita history, breeding, health, and care.

Banner Text  She wrote the ACA's original Breeders' Code of Ethics.

Banner Text  She founded and operates one of the most well-known, highly regarded Akita kennels established in early U.S. Akita history.

Banner Text  She was a founding member of one of the first Akita rescue organizations (ARSA).

I say this not because I obtained my first three Akitas from her. As a scientist working in a Drosophila (fruit fly) genetics lab at Cal Tech at the time, I was already interested in (and somewhat knowledgeable about) genetics in general. But, as a result of many long Saturday afternoon conversations in the late '60s "talking Akitas" in her living room, she sparked my interest in Akita genetics / pedigrees and ultimately mentored me into joining the ACA Registration Committee. If not for Liz Harrell, I would never have been in the right place at the right time to have written this book. Thank you, Liz, for all you've done.
