What is it?

This fascinating, informative book is a collection of four works—all centered around dogs, some of which were Akitas.

    Banner Text  130-page, 8.5" x 11", softcover book.

     Greatly expanded collection of four articles previously published in The Akita Journal (1978–1981).

       Each of the original articles won "Best Article of the Year in a Single-Breed Magazine," awarded by the Dog Writers Association of America.

       In this volume, the text of the original articles is augmented by twice the number of pages and enhanced by some 70 illustrations, more than 200 footnotes, and 8 appendices.

     Painstakingly researched from primary references and written by long-time dog lover and Akita owner, Nicholas C. Rhoden.

     Limited edition published in 2002.

This book comprises four separate works, each supplemented with one to three appendices:

     Hachi-ko, the Loyal Dog—and the Forgotten Story of an American Tribute.

     Helen Keller: Saint of Three Burdens and the Forgotten Story of Her Akitas—First in America.

     Myths and Legends of the Dog in Ancient Japan: Demon or Demi-God?

     Taro and Jiro: The Never-to-Be-Forgotten Story of an Incredible Survival—and the Untold Story of an Omen.

       To view a large collection of photos re this antarctic expedition and the Karafuto dogs involved, go to the web site created by Dr. Toru Kikuchi, a geologist who managed the expedition's dogsled team. There you'll find 16 sets of photos, 10 photos per set. The language of the text is Japanese, but that of the photos is universal.
